Alexander Tunchev started off his playing career at FC Hebar Pazardzhik, FC Iskar Sofia and FC Belasitsa. Most significant for his career were his stays at PFC CSKA-Sofia and PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv.
Tunchev was in the CSKA Sofia squad twice - between 2005 and 2008 and in the 2014/15 campaign. He has recorded the following achievements with the Reds:
- 2 x Championship winner (2004/05 and 2007/08);
- Bulgarian Cup (2005/06);
- second place in the Championship (2005/06);
- Bulgarian Supercup (2005/06).
Those achievements brought four games in the Europesn competitions. Tunchev's goal in the Besiktas game (CSKA-Sofia 2:0 Besiktas, September 2006) was a moment he will always be remembered for as a player. Furthermore, he captained the team as of the next season.
With the black-and-whites from Plovdiv Tunchev became Champion of Bulgaria in the 2003/04 campaign. Later, in 2015/16, he was again in the squad of Lokomotiv. As part of Loko's coaching staff he has had a tremendous success. The team triumphed with the Bulgarian Cup for two seasons in a row (2018/19 and 2019/20).
On an international level Tunchev has played for English Leicester City and Polish Zaglembe Lyubin. For the Bulgarian national team he appeared in 11 games and scored the winning goal for the squad vs Luxembourg (11.10.2006) for the Euro qualifying round.
